We also knew that, eventually, we would want to learn how to extend our support of solutions coverage to the many small newsrooms that serve communities across America. But we recognized quickly that Stein was a savvy young news entrepreneur who merited our attention. Now, The Voice didn’t exactly fit with our strategic focus at the time on big, highly visible news organizations. And it would, Stein hoped, have a strong bias for critical coverage of solutions to social problems. It would break stories and do deep-dive investigations. The Ithaca Voice would be resolutely local in its focus. A recent Cornell University graduate and award-winning reporter at the Syracuse Post-Standard, Stein had just launched The Ithaca Voice, an independent online news organization that would fill what he saw as a void in Ithaca’s news ecosystem.
